About the Théâtre du Rictus

Founded By Laurent Maindon and Yann Josso in 1996, the company stands up for contemporary texts but doesn't deny itself any chance of using texts from the classical repertoire.  Since he began as a stage director, Laurent Maindon has been more and more interested in a personified theatre where existential questions are simply at the centre of daily life.
The profound loneliness of the human being, the wounds of abandonment, love, power, and the complexities of human relationships, the deep-seated motivations of any action... are interlinks to move each member of the audience, revive his or her own nostalgia, stimulate his or her imagination...  That's how the grin (rictus in French) may become cruel and unveil some sort of a clear-sightedness which doesn't make concessions. It leads us to observe the world, its torments and traps with the utmost lucidity. A way to examine life from a caustic point of view, when sometimes we cry, sometimes we laugh.

For the departmental council and the regional one, the Théâtre du Quartier Libre is known and recognized as an important and cultural structure whose the purpose in to create and spread the culture bound to the theatre.

The Théâtre du Quartier Libre offers to the public a wide programming on the art centred around the dramatical one  which associates most of the theatrical companies of the region or the department. Also the willpower is opening to the popular audience concerts of classical music.

The Théâtre du Quartier libre in built since 2003, it has a main floor that can receive 496 persons, a big stage of 260m² with a technical equipment and a special room for practising. At the end of 2008, the theatre will have an additional room, in the future chapel of the Ursulines now in alteration, that will be able to receive 150 spectators. 6 persons forms the permanent team. Also the theatre takes on an association of volunteers. Most of thirty professionnal shows whose some of them are specially made for young people.

The Théâtre du Quartier libre is connected with the inhabitants of the city and the region. Its purpose is clear: defending the creation and the diffusion of the theatrical art and its development.

Since 2005, The Théâtre du Rictus is associated to the theatre. This theatrical company takes avantage of the total equipment to create different shows for people, schools and also it takes part in formation plans.

Anonimity, violence, brain-washing, submission... but also irony, sick humour and eccentricity.
In the jungle of cities, people get lost without knowing who they are. Who are these chaps playing the other's game? Have they got a choice, are they executioners or victims? Could this girl have had another destiny? Must reality always override fiction?
Characters in their loneliness and the difficulty of being. A western society in pursuit of an identity and values. A kaleidoscopic vision, a huge zapping on a backdrop of trivial events, between poetry and stark reality, turning in on oneself and fear of the other, fear of oneself and denial of the other, between road movie and urban western.

Levey's texts resemble meteorites fallen from a tormented sky. LM
